Objectives
  • To engage faculty and students of higher educational institutions with rural realities, enabling them to understand and assess grassroots challenges.

  • To identify, customise, and implement innovative existing technologies or develop new solutions that meet the specific needs of rural communities.

  • To leverage the knowledge, research capacity, and resources of educational institutions for the effective execution of national and government development programmes in rural regions.

  • To connect higher education with community needs, creating a meaningful cycle of knowledge transfer and societal impact that contributes to sustainable and inclusive rural development.

  • To reorient academic curricula and research so that they are more responsive to rural challenges and national development priorities. 

Functions
  • Adopt and work with rural communities/cluster of villages to conduct situational analyses and need assessments that identify developmental priorities.

  • Organise field visits, surveys, and village engagement activities involving faculty and students to understand socioeconomic contexts and grassroots challenges.

  • Facilitate the transfer and local adaptation of appropriate technologies developed by academia to meet rural needs in areas such as water, energy, sanitation, agriculture, education, and health.

  • Collaborate with government bodies, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), NGOs, and local stakeholders to enhance both implementation and impact of developmental solutions.

  • Promote participatory research and community-driven problem solving, encouraging students to co-create solutions and iterate improvements based on feedback from rural stakeholders.

  • Support capacity building and skill development initiatives in rural communities through training, workshops, and awareness campaigns conducted by institutional teams.

  • Document and monitor outcomes of interventions to ensure sustainability and assess developmental impact over time, aligning with outcomes expected in national outreach programmes.

  • Report activities, outputs, best practices, and impacts in institutional records and quality assurance frameworks (like NAAC) under the extension and outreach criteria.
